 Friday Letter  - 10th January 2025

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year everyone.  We hope that you all had a good Christmas break.  

It has been an absolute delight to be back with our Benhall family this week.  The children have come back with a really positive attitude to their learning.  As always, the teachers have given their time over the Christmas break to ensure that the children are inspired by their new learning this term.  When I visited each year group over the course of this week, all the classes were so excited to tell me about what they had found out.  Reception are learning about Owls inspired by the text Owl Babies by Martin Waddell.  Year 1 are answering the big question - "Are all continents the same?"  This week they have been focusing on Antarctica.  Year 2 are answering the big question - "Are all oceans the same?"  They have been particularly excited by learning about parts of a fish.

School Council

This week the children have been thinking about what qualities would make a good school counsellor.  They decided that school counsellors are good at organising things, they look after their friends and help Miss Morris with her jobs.  The children were encouraged to vote their new school counsellors for terms 3 and 4.  This is the first opportunity for our reception children to join the school council.

Changing Weather Conditions

There have already been many changes to the weather this week, including rain, snow and sleet.  When the sun is out, we experience crisp blue sky days.

The paths and playground access to the entrances to our school will be gritted each evening.  Please note that we need to use this sparingly on the soft surfaces in the reception area and under the climbing frames as the salt perishes the rubber.  Please help us to keep your children safe by not allowing them to play on these surfaces before or after school.

The children access the outdoor learning spaces throughout the day so please ensure they have a warm, waterproof coat in school every day.  Hats and gloves must be labelled and encourage your children to put them into their coat pocket when not being worn.

Welcome and welcome back.

You will remember that Mrs Wintle and Mrs Newman left Benhall at the end of last term.  They would like to thank everyone for their good luck messages. 

This week we welcomed Miss Banner, who is our new clerical support in the office.  She will be in school every morning and one afternoon a week.  She has settled in really well and is looking forward to getting to know you all.

Miss Rudge, who was with us last term working in a number of classes, will be taking on Mrs Newman's role in year 2.  She will be based in Indigo Class.  

We are delighted that Mrs Pain, Mrs Spence, Miss Quiney and Mrs Semken have returned to their roles this week.  We are pleased to see that they are feeling better and they have all shared how much they have enjoyed being back with the children this week.  

Purple Learning

This term our Purple Learning focus will be  ‘I have the resilience to persevere’.   The children are already demonstrating what brilliant Purple Learners they are.  

In Reception, the children had the opportunity to use the large apparatus for the first time in their gym lesson.  While they enjoyed using it to climb on they really had to persevere in order to make basic gym shapes on the large apparatus.  Well done Reception, we think you are amazing.

PE in the Spring Term

Reception - Wednesday and Friday

Year 1 - Monday and Friday

Year 2 - Tuesday and Thursday

Children should come to school in their PE kit which is-

  • Navy Tracksuit bottoms or shorts
  • White or Purple T-Shirt
  • Navy Jumper
  • Trainers or daps

Forest School in the Spring Term

We are thrilled that Mrs Stephens will be leading forest school sessions for us again this year.  Children will wear their uniform under the waterproofs provided by the school.

A huge thank you to the PTA who support us with purchasing our new waterproofs this year.

Please make sure that your child wears trousers as part of their uniform on Forest School Days which are as follows -

  • Reception - Thursday (every other week starting from 9/1/25)
  • Year 1 - Tuesday (every other week starting from 7/1/25)
  • Year 2 - Wednesday (every other week starting from 8/1/25)
